Scotland's Steyn expects Six Nations 'fun' against France

Kyle Steyn believes players and fans alike are in for an entertaining encounter when his Scotland side face tournament leaders France in Saturday's much-anticipated Six Nations clash in Edinburgh.

Text size:

France will wrap up the title with a game to spare should they secure a bonus-point win at Murrayfield, regardless of results elsewhere, while Scotland could leapfrog Les Bleus at the top of the table if they secure a similar victory.

Glasgow wing Steyn, a try-scorer in Scotland's last-gasp 26-23 win away to Wales in Cardiff a fortnight ago, is well aware of the threat posed by a dynamic France team.

But Steyn reckons both sides will be committed to an attacking game.

"We know the challenge that's coming this week and the kind of machine that is French rugby at the moment," said Steyn on Wednesday.

"It's two teams that love to play rugby. They are often really fatiguing games because you've got two teams that are trying to have a crack. Both teams will make errors and we obviously know how lethal they are from transition, so you've got to try not to make those errors.

"At the same time, they've got a big juggernaut up front that needs to move and we're relishing the chance to have a go against them and try and make them defend. You look forward to these games, they're always so much fun."

The 32-year-old Steyn has often found himself as back-up to Scotland's two all-time leading try-scores, Duhan van der Merwe and Darcy Graham on the wing, in previous seasons.

But he has forced himself into the starting side recently, even when the duo have both have been available to Scotland coach Gregor Townsend, and is relishing the challenge of facing France.

"Test matches can be so different. When you play an Ireland or other teams like that, it just seems like a gridlock game the whole week," said Steyn.

"But this is a game where you just know it's going to be fun from one to 80 (the first to 80th minutes). You don't know what's going to happen, but it's going to flow and it's going to be a lot of fun."
