'Iron Mike' Ditka hailed as 'gold standard' NFL legend

Mike Ditka's death on Friday at age 86 was mourned across the NFL as colleagues he inspired and rivals recalled his toughness and tenacity as a player and coach.

Text size:

Ditka won two NFL titles as a tight end, playing for Chicago and Dallas, and took two Super Bowl crowns, as a Dallas assistant and as head coach of a 1985 Chicago Bears side hailed as one of the greatest in league history.

"Mike Ditka epitomized football over so many years. He brought intensity, authenticity and an unmistakable personality to everything he did," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

"As a hall of Fame player, Super Bowl-winning coach with his beloved and iconic Bears and as a broadcaster, Mike served as an ambassador for the game and inspired generations of fans."

The Bears' team flag was lowered to half-staff Friday at the club's headquarters in tribute to the legend known as "Iron Mike" from his days as a game-changing tight end in the 1960s and 1970s to his iconic stint as coach in the 1980s.

"Coach Ditka was the gold standard in terms of this place. He's a legend," current Bears coach Ben Johnson said.

"His impact is still being felt to this day and as the head coach of the Bears I feel humbled to be in that same chair he was once in."

- Special individual -

Ditka revolutionized the tight end position with his receiving skills to support his blocking ability.

"As a player, he was a dominant force and certainly his impact as a coach as well. I feel like he carried that demeanor and mindset over to coaching the entire team and certainly those teams emulated what he was all about," Johnson said.

"That defense there in the '80s, that was something to behold. We keep talking about the 'Monsters of the Midway' and how we would like to bring that back, they were the standard. He had a lot to do with that. He was a special individual."

Even the Green Bay Packers, the Bears' archrivals, paid tribute to Ditka.

"One of the fiercest competitors in NFL history, Mike helped define the intensity and tradition of the Packers-Bears rivalry," the Packers said in a statement.

"His contributions to the game and to a rivalry that has meant so much to both franchises will always be respected and remembered by the Green Bay Packers."

The Pro Football Hall of Fame said in a statement Ditka's "toughness and leadership helped define an era of professional football," and his "legacy as a player, coach and football icon will endure for generations."

Former Ditka NFL rival Archie Manning, chairman of the College Football Hall of Fame, said Ditka "brought an intensity and toughness to the field that few could match.

"He went on to become one of the most recognizable figures in football history. From his Hall of Fame playing career to his success as a Super Bowl-winning coach, Mike left an incredible mark on the game. He was a true football legend and his legacy will endure for generations."

Ditka coached the New Orleans Saints from 1997-1999, going 15-33 without a winning campaign, and that club recalled him as an "unforgettable presence in our sport. Mike's life was defined by an unyielding work ethic, a fierce love for the game and a relentless determination that helped reshape American football.

"His presence left an indelible mark on our organization."

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell recalled being interviewed as an NFL Draft prospect by Ditka in his Saints days.

"Growing up, Ditka was it. Huge fan." Campbell said. "Him asking questions about where you grew up, how you think, how you're wired, the game, what you see -- it was awesome."
