Wall Street Tech Stocks Plunge as AI Regulation Fears Mount

US stock markets suffered significant losses following the midterm elections, driven by investor anxiety over potential new regulations on artificial intelligence. The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 fell 5.5 percent, while major tech conglomerates collectively lost more than one trillion dollars in market capitalization as political shifts raised concerns about infrastructure and policy constraints.

US financial markets experienced sharp declines following the midterm elections, which resulted in Democratic majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The political shift triggered immediate selling pressure on Wall Street, particularly within the technology sector, as investors anticipated stricter regulatory oversight from the new legislative majority.

The technology-focused Nasdaq 100 index dropped 5.5 percent in early trading, settling at 26,878 points. Broader market indicators also fell significantly, with the S&P 500 declining 3.2 percent to 7,444 points and the Dow Jones Industrial Index falling 2.2 percent to close at 52,193 points.

Companies involved in artificial intelligence development were among the hardest hit by the sell-off. The group known as the "Glorious Seven"—comprising Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla—saw their combined market value decrease by more than one trillion US dollars. Individual stocks within this group faced steep losses; shares of Tesla and SpaceX, both associated with Elon Musk, dropped by over ten percent.

Market strategists at UBS warned that political resistance could delay the construction of data centers, potentially slowing the pace of AI infrastructure expansion through 2028. Critics have highlighted the high energy consumption and environmental impact of these facilities as key concerns driving the regulatory scrutiny.
