Physicist Claims Alberta Data Center Releases Energy of 23 Atomic Bombs Daily

Robert Davies, a physicist representing the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, has submitted an assessment claiming the proposed O’Leary Digital Wonder Valley data center in Alberta would release energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs daily. The report supports the Indigenous group’s legal challenge against the $70 billion project, arguing that existing environmental regulations are fundamentally unsuited for developments of this scale.

Robert Davies, a professor at Utah State University representing the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation (SLCN), has submitted an assessment claiming that the proposed O’Leary Digital Wonder Valley data center in Alberta would release energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs daily.

Davies prepared the report to support the Indigenous group’s legal challenge against the project, arguing that existing environmental regulations are fundamentally unsuited for developments of this scale. The assessment was specifically included in the SLCN’s judicial review filing.

The O’Leary Digital Wonder Valley project, first unveiled in 2024, is designed to become the largest data center on the planet. The development carries a budget of $70 billion and spans 64 square kilometers, or approximately 15,815 acres, within the SLCN’s traditional territory. The site is located roughly 130 kilometers southwest of the nation’s reserve.

Davies’ central contention focuses on the sheer volume of thermal output generated by such a massive facility. In his assessment, he describes the project as potentially "the largest single-site heat source on the entire planet." To illustrate the magnitude of this energy release, Davies utilized the comparison to atomic bombs, noting that the calculation is a "first-order estimate intended to convey scale" rather than a precise measurement.

"Now of course, that’s not explosions, but that’s just trying to get a sense of how much energy we’re talking about," Davies stated in the document. He added that the environmental effect would "almost certainly be large, if not extreme," and emphasized that all quantitative figures in the report should be treated as preliminary estimates to be confirmed against the developer’s own filings.

Davies explicitly clarified that the document is "not a comprehensive environmental review, a formal expert report, or a legal opinion." However, it highlights significant concerns regarding the impact of waste heat on surrounding wildlife and ecosystems. Davies criticized the application of traditional environmental legislation to giant data center projects, stating, "When people talk about environmental regulations that these projects have to adhere to, those regulations were not created with anything of this scale in mind."

He further noted that he could not imagine allowing the project to proceed without full, comprehensive assessments tailored to its unique demands.

O’Leary Digital has responded to the filing through CEO Paul Palandjian. In an email statement, Palandjian emphasized the company's adherence to legal processes. "We also respect the robust and stringent regulatory process we must follow in advancing Wonder Valley," he wrote. He added that the company is engaged in "productive dialogue with Indigenous communities through consultation and engagement" and remains committed to this work.

The SLCN’s reliance on Davies’ assessment underscores the growing tension between rapid digital infrastructure expansion and environmental oversight in regions with significant Indigenous land rights. The physicist’s report serves as a critical piece of evidence in the group’s argument that the project’s scale necessitates regulatory frameworks beyond those currently available.
