Sue Devaney, who portrays Debbie Webster on Coronation Street, has revealed that her character is preparing to step down from running the Chariot Square hotel as her battle with dementia progresses. Sue Devaney, the actress behind Debbie Webster on Coronation Street, has confirmed that her character is preparing to relinquish control of the Chariot Square hotel as her struggle with dementia intensifies. The decision marks a critical shift in the long-running storyline, which has been widely noted for its nuanced depiction of cognitive decline.

For months, viewers have watched Devaney navigate the emotional complexity of Debbie’s condition, balancing the harsh realities of the disease with the character’s enduring resilience and sharp wit. However, as symptoms worsen, the practical demands of managing the hotel have become increasingly difficult to sustain despite the support of her husband, Ronnie Bailey, played by Vinta Morgan, her son Carl, portrayed by Jonathan Howard, and Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott.

In an interview with Inside Soap, Devaney explained that Debbie’s choice to sign the hotel over to Ronnie was not made lightly but was a necessary response to her deteriorating health. "Everybody is telling her, saying this can’t work anymore," Devaney said. She cited specific incidents, such as the loss of Adam Barlow’s ring and a previous moment where Debbie handed keys to Paula, as wake-up calls that highlighted her declining capabilities.

"I think she thought, ‘I can’t do this’, she probably should have stopped a good few months ago, but nobody wants to tell Debbie, do they?" Devaney noted. While the legal and operational responsibilities have been transferred to Ronnie, Devaney acknowledged the lingering psychological attachment to the business. She described a scene where Debbie appoints Ryan as Ronnie’s right-hand man to ensure continuity, yet emphasized that "when you’re married to somebody and you sign everything over, you still feel like it’s yours."

The physical manifestation of Debbie’s condition is also evolving. Devaney revealed that viewers will notice a definite shift in the character’s appearance as she withdraws from her professional role. "There’s a definite change now in what she’s wearing, because she’s not at the hotel," she said. Additionally, makeup usage will decrease significantly due to the physical toll of application. "I think there’s going to be times soon when you don’t see her with much make-up, because she can’t do it like she used to."

The timeline for Debbie’s potential departure from the show has also been clarified by her on-screen son. Jonathan Howard, speaking to The Sun, indicated that this Christmas may be Debbie’s final festive appearance. Although Devaney is contracted until August, Howard confirmed that the dementia storyline is being accelerated in the scripts.

"Sue is contracted to August, but already they are ramping up the dementia storyline – it’s going to be very sad, so sad," Howard said. He reflected on the emotional bond between his character and Debbie’s, noting that since he began filming, she has been a supportive presence. "Knowing that at some point, it’s still a year down the line, it’s going to come to an end, it’s so sad."

Howard pointed out that with Carl turning 40 just before Christmas, there is a growing awareness among the cast and crew that this may be the last time Debbie appears as herself. "You don’t know how long with dementia someone’s going to survive, but there is a feeling this is the last Christmas that she is herself," he explained.

Devaney expressed gratitude for the audience’s reception of Debbie, who has become one of Weatherfield’s most beloved matriarchs. "I felt so overjoyed as it meant that I’d been doing something right," Devaney said. She noted that she intentionally infused the character with specific mannerisms and phrases to create a distinct identity. "I’ve put all of my mums-isms into Debbie and all of her unique sayings so that has been so special to see people go, ‘oh we love that Northern Debbie.’"

As the storyline approaches its conclusion, the focus remains on the dignity with which Debbie navigates her final stages of clarity. The transition of the hotel to Ronnie marks not just a plot point, but a poignant acknowledgment of the limits of human endurance in the face of progressive illness.
